FOODS TO NEVER EAT
Ice! Your braces will be completely destroyed by it.
Hard candies and suckers! Chewing on them is just too tempting.
Pencils and pens! They tend to destroy during final exam time because they are prime (non-food) chewing targets.
A variety of nuts, gum, caramel, taffy, and peanuts!
Your gums and teeth will be sore the first time the braces are applied and every time you go in for an adjustment thereafter. They will feel “weird” at first until you get used to them. It won’t take long for you to forget about them after a week.
There is usually a couple of days of pain each time. Be sure to prepare some soft food ahead of time, such as Jello gelatin, pudding, soup, mashed potatoes, egg salad, etc.
Using a blender, you can make smoothies with frozen fruit chunks and fruit juices. Your refrigerator/freezer should be stocked with ice cream, sherbet, and yogurt.
If you need pain relief (acetaminophen or ibuprofen) and do not suffer from any health conditions that affect the usage of these medications, your orthodontist is likely to recommend over-the-counter painkillers.
